
The head of UN mission reported to the press that a militia led by General Sheka Ntado Ntaberi is ready to lay down its weapons in order to restore order and peace in the region. The militia has been active in the region for the past three years battling with rival forces for control of gold mines.
Sheka Ntado’s militia has been frequently accused of mass rape and murder in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The dwellers of the region celebrated when the news of the surrender reached them.
A self-defence militia led by "General" Sheka Ntabo Ntaberi and known as Sheka Mai Mai has been active in the region at least three years, battling rival forces for control of gold mines. "Thirty-six hours ago, Pinga (a town in the region) was liberated from Sheka Mai Mai and of general Sheka himself.” Said Amos Kobi in an interview. The people want the authority of the state restored as soon as possible.
The UN mission (MONUSCO) reported that thirty four civilians including twenty children between the age of six months and seventeen years were killed in different cases of violence conducted by Sheka Mai Mai.
MONUSCO have an arrest warrant for Sheka which was issued by the state prosecutors. It has been reported that between the 19th and 20th of November over a hundred and forty fighters from the Shaka Mai Mai turne themselves in.
Mary Robinson from the UN special envoy to central Africa warned that peace and development in the Democratic Republic of Congo relies on disarming armed movements in the region. Robinson also cautioned other armed forces hiding in the bush to surrender themselves.
The Congolese army defeated the evil M23 with the help of the UN military which aimed to neutralise armed movements in the region and its surrounding. The UN intervention brigade claimed that there are still several armed movements which are still active in the area and have to be stopped soon.
